“A few weeks earlier, a nurse named Salaria Kee had offered her skills to the American Red Cross to help flood victims in her native Ohio. ‘They told me they had no place for me,’ she remembered, ‘that the color of my skin would make me more trouble than I’d be worth to them.’ When she repeated the story to a friend, the response was: ‘Why not Spain?’ So she enrolled.
‘What! You’re going to Spain in wartime,’ her friends in Harlem exclaimed in amazement. ‘And alone?’
