To answer the "Byzantium" question, it's not taboo. Many scholars, of both medieval history in general, and of specifically Eastern Rome use the term in their lectures, class titles, and publications. Using the term as an insult didn't appear until about two centuries after the fall of Constantinople. Using the term historically tells people you're talking about a specific polity within a specific period of time with a specific set of characteristics.
